The brachial plexus is the network of nerves that controls the whole arm, including the wrist and hand. Injury to these nerves, during childbirth or in an accident, can cause conditions such as Erb's palsy, affecting movement and sensation.
Most infants have a mild, temporary injury that needs only gentle physiotherapy and time. When nerves do not heal on their own, surgery can repair them and restore some function.

Babies and adults
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
In babies, the injury usually happens during a difficult birth. Most recover with gentle physiotherapy; the arm's progress is checked regularly, and surgery is considered if recovery is not adequate by about six months.
In adults, it usually follows a road accident, often a fall from a motorcycle. Nerve tests (EMG) and an MRI show which nerves are damaged. Surgery gives the best results when it is done early, ideally within 3–6 months of the injury, before the muscles waste.
Procedures
- Nerve graft: if there is no adequate recovery by about six months, a nerve from elsewhere in the body is used to bridge the damaged section
- Nerve transfer: for severe injuries, especially when the nerve is torn from the spinal cord, a donor nerve is used to restore function; it can be more targeted than a graft
- Muscle or tendon transfers: when nerve surgery is not possible or has been delayed beyond 12 months of age
- Other surgery: removing scar tissue from nerves, shoulder and elbow reconstruction
Recovery
Healing time depends on the injury and the type of surgery, and is discussed for each patient.
What recovery looks like
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Nerves regrow slowly, so movement returns gradually over months and can keep improving for two years or more. Physiotherapy, at home and with a therapist, is essential throughout to keep the joints supple and to strengthen muscles as the nerves recover.
Risks
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Infection, bleeding, and weakness or numbness where a donor nerve is taken. Nerve surgery may restore only part of the arm's movement and feeling; Dr. Neeraj will explain what can realistically be expected for your injury.
