Vitiligo surgery in Lucknow

Grafting and cell-transplant techniques to restore colour to stable vitiligo patches.

Vitiligo is a condition in which patches of skin lose their colour. It can also affect the eyes, the inside of the mouth and the hair. Affected skin is more sensitive to sunlight, and it is hard to predict whether patches will spread.

When light therapy and medicines have not worked, surgery can even out skin tone by restoring pigment.

Techniques

  • Skin grafting: very small sections of healthy, pigmented skin are moved to the affected areas; used for small patches
  • Blister grafting: blisters are raised on pigmented skin with suction and their tops transplanted to the discoloured skin
  • Cellular suspension transplant: pigment cells (melanocytes) are taken from healthy skin, prepared in a solution and applied to the affected area; colour may start to return within four weeks

Risks

Possible risks include infection, scarring, a cobblestone appearance, uneven colour and the area not re-pigmenting. With blister grafting, the suction can occasionally trigger a new patch. Your surgeon will go through these with you before deciding.

Recovery

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

Grafted areas are dressed for about a week. Colour returns gradually: it can begin within a few weeks and keeps improving over 3–6 months. Light therapy is often continued afterwards to help the colour spread.

Is it right for me?

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

Surgery is considered when vitiligo has been stable, with no new or spreading patches, usually for at least 6–12 months, and light therapy and medicines have not worked. Smaller, stable patches respond best.
