Orthognathic surgery moves the upper jaw, lower jaw or both, lengthening or shortening them and moving them up, down, in or out. It is needed when the jaws and teeth do not meet correctly.
Bringing the teeth together correctly improves jaw joint function and chewing, and can also help speech, breathing, sleep apnoea, gum health and facial appearance.

Planning
Because the bite and the face change together, the surgery is carefully planned with a team, usually alongside orthodontic treatment.
The procedure
To correct an open bite, both jaws are usually repositioned (bimaxillary surgery). Some bone may be removed from the upper jaw, which is then secured with plates and screws.
Recovery
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
You usually stay in hospital for one to three nights. Swelling is greatest in the first few days and mostly settles over 2–3 weeks. You will eat a liquid, then soft, diet for about six weeks while the bones heal. Numbness of the lip or chin is common and usually improves over months. Most people return to work or study after 2–4 weeks.
Your treatment timeline
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
- Braces before surgery to line up the teeth: often 12–18 months
- Jaw surgery
- Braces after surgery to settle the bite: often 6–12 months
Is it right for me?
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Jaw surgery is done once the face has finished growing, usually from about 16–18 in girls and 18–21 in boys. It is for problems braces alone cannot fix: a bite that is badly out of line, difficulty chewing or biting, an open bite, or a jaw that affects breathing or appearance.
Risks
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Swelling, bleeding, infection, numbness of the lower lip or chin (usually temporary, occasionally lasting), and a bite that needs further adjustment.
Your first consultation
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
- Dr. Neeraj Upadhyay asks about your concern, your health, your medicines and any previous treatment.
- He examines you and explains the options, including when surgery is not the best choice.
- You hear what the procedure involves, the recovery, the risks and the cost, before you decide anything.
- Photographs may be taken to plan your treatment, only with your consent.

What affects the cost
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
