Injuries, especially road accidents, can cause cuts and fractures of the facial bones. Early assessment, once the patient is stable, matters: fractures that are not treated can heal in the wrong position and leave a permanent deformity.

Facial fractures

  • Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF): under general anaesthesia, the bones are fixed rigidly for the best result and early recovery
  • Closed reduction: for an isolated broken nose
  • Recovery after ORIF takes 3–12 weeks, with pain relief and rest; facial swelling settles by itself

Cleft lip and palate

With timely care, cleft lip and palate can be corrected to a satisfactory level. Care starts at birth with feeding advice so the child meets nutritional and developmental milestones.

  • Cleft lip (with early nose correction): around 3 months of age
  • Cleft palate: at 9 months to 1 year, to prevent a nasal voice
  • Later, at the right age: bone grafting, rhinoplasty and jaw surgery where needed

Ear deformity

Ear differences present from birth range from prominent ears to a missing ear (anotia). Reconstructive surgery can achieve a satisfactory result.

Vascular lesions

  • Haemangiomas: up to about 2 years of age they often respond to medicines; surgery is needed if they grow, block the eyes, nose or mouth, become infected or bleed
  • Vascular malformations: small lesions may be treated with injections (sclerotherapy) or image-guided embolisation; larger ones need carefully planned surgery

Cleft care usually involves several specialists, such as an orthodontist and a speech therapist, and continues into the teenage years. Parents are guided at each stage on feeding, speech and the timing of the next step.

Risks

Infection, bleeding, swelling, numbness of the cheek, lip or chin and, after fractures, teeth that do not meet perfectly, which may need further treatment. Cleft care is staged, and some children need more than one operation.

    A few months ago, I had an accident and suffered deep cuts near my eyes and nose. I visited Lucknow Plastic Surgery, and my overall experience was genuinely very good. The doctor and staff were extremely polite and supportive throughout the process. The assistant took me to the operation theatre, and I was impressed by how hygienic and well-maintained everything was. They made sure proper hygiene protocols were followed with minimal unnecessary human touch. The doctor first asked me a few questions, carefully cleaned the wound, and then did the stitches with almost zero pain. The surprising part was that the procedure was done so smoothly that I barely felt anything. During the procedure, the assistant even played songs by Jubin Nautiyal on Alexa, which helped me stay calm and relaxed. The doctor was very patient and repeatedly asked me to let him know if I felt any pain or discomfort. After the procedure, he gave simple and practical instructions about care, prescribed only a few medicines and one cream, advised facial exercises with coconut oil, and suggested using sunscreen without promoting any particular brand. Overall, I had a very comfortable and experienced a much more than i have written, and I truly appreciate the care and professionalism of the entire team.
