Microvascular surgery in Lucknow

Reconstruction of the face, head and neck using tissue moved with its own blood supply, often after cancer surgery.

Microvascular reconstruction rebuilds the face and neck using bone, muscle and skin from other parts of the body, joined under the microscope to blood vessels at the new site. It is most often used to restore form and function after removal of head and neck tumours.

Dr. Neeraj Upadhyay trained in microvascular surgery at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore.

How it works

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

A flap is a piece of tissue (skin, fat, muscle or bone) taken with its own artery and vein, often from the forearm, thigh or lower leg. Under the microscope its vessels are joined to vessels in the neck, so the tissue lives in its new place. The area it was taken from heals with a scar.

When it is used

Treatment for cancers of the mouth, tongue, jaws, larynx, pharynx, salivary glands, sinuses, skull and skin often combines surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, which can change how the head and neck look and work. Microvascular surgery restores as much normality as possible.

Recovery

Patients usually spend about two days in intensive care and a further five to seven days in hospital. Physiotherapy then assesses what support is needed at home or in rehabilitation.

Working with your cancer team

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

Reconstruction is usually done in the same operation as the tumour removal, planned together with the cancer surgeon. Speech and swallowing therapy may be needed afterwards, and family support at home matters during the weeks of recovery.

Risks

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

The main risk is the flap's blood supply failing in the first few days, which is why it is checked often and sometimes needs a return to theatre. Other risks are infection, bleeding, and slow healing or weakness where the tissue was taken.

Your first consultation

General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.

  1. Dr. Neeraj Upadhyay asks about your concern, your health, your medicines and any previous treatment.
  2. He examines you and explains the options, including when surgery is not the best choice.
  3. You hear what the procedure involves, the recovery, the risks and the cost, before you decide anything.
  4. Photographs may be taken to plan your treatment, only with your consent.

Bring a list of your medicines and any reports or scans. Consultations are in the clinic, or by video if you live outside Lucknow.
