A scar is the skin's natural way of repairing a wound, after an accident, surgery, burns or acne. Scars can be flat, raised, sunken, coloured, painful or itchy.
No treatment removes a scar completely. The aim is to make it less noticeable: by disguising it, moving it, or reducing how much it stands out. Skin type, age and the kind of scar all shape the plan, and more than one procedure may be needed.

Facial scars
Facial scar revision should wait about 6 months after the injury, so the body can heal fully; many scars blend in by themselves in that time.
Treatments
- Scar revision: the scar is opened and closed again with fine stitches, leaving a thinner line
- Z-plasty: repositions a scar to run along the skin's natural creases, where it shows less
- Acne scars (ice-pick, rolling, boxcar): punch excision or subcision
- Raised or rough scars: dermabrasion or laser resurfacing
- Keloid and hypertrophic scars: steroid treatment, silicone sheets or pressure first; surgery if needed
Before the procedure
Keep the area clean and do not apply moisturisers. Stop smoking at least 2 days before. Tell your surgeon about blood thinners and any long-term medicines. Most procedures are done as a day case.
Recovery
Bruising and swelling usually settle within 2–3 days. Results become noticeable after a month or more. Keep out of the sun, avoid strenuous activity for a few days, and avoid contact sports, cycling, weight training, yoga and aerobics for at least 3 weeks.
Is it right for me?
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Treatment suits scars that have settled, usually 6–12 months after the injury or operation, and that bother you because of how they look or feel, or because they limit movement. Keloid scars can return after surgery, so they are usually treated with injections, silicone or pressure first.
Risks
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Infection, bleeding, a scar that ends up wider or more raised than hoped, changes in skin colour and, with keloids, the scar coming back. Results depend on your skin and how you heal.

A few months ago, I had an accident and suffered deep cuts near my eyes and nose. I visited Lucknow Plastic Surgery, and my overall experience was genuinely very good. The doctor and staff were extremely polite and supportive throughout the process. The assistant took me to the operation theatre, and I was impressed by how hygienic and well-maintained everything was. They made sure proper hygiene protocols were followed with minimal unnecessary human touch. The doctor first asked me a few questions, carefully cleaned the wound, and then did the stitches with almost zero pain. The surprising part was that the procedure was done so smoothly that I barely felt anything. During the procedure, the assistant even played songs by Jubin Nautiyal on Alexa, which helped me stay calm and relaxed. The doctor was very patient and repeatedly asked me to let him know if I felt any pain or discomfort. After the procedure, he gave simple and practical instructions about care, prescribed only a few medicines and one cream, advised facial exercises with coconut oil, and suggested using sunscreen without promoting any particular brand. Overall, I had a very comfortable and experienced a much more than i have written, and I truly appreciate the care and professionalism of the entire team.

Questions about scar removal
Can a scar be removed completely?
No. Treatment makes a scar much less noticeable, but cannot erase it.
How soon after an injury can a facial scar be revised?
Usually after about 6 months, once the skin has fully healed.
Will I need more than one treatment?
Often, yes. Acne scars and raised scars usually need a course of treatment; a single surgical revision may be enough for one scar.
