MCh Plastic Surgery (KGMU) · MCI Reg. No. UPMC 536864.9 from 324 Google reviews
Burns surgery repairs and restores function to areas affected by burns. It covers acute burn care and later reconstruction: skin grafts, release of tight scars (contractures) and procedures to improve the appearance of scars.
Some operations happen soon after the injury; others come later during rehabilitation. Children with serious burns often need several operations as they grow.

Types of burns surgery
- Debridement: cleaning the burn and removing dead or infected tissue, before other surgery
- Skin grafts: temporary grafts protect the wound; permanent grafts use the patient's own skin for deep burns, followed by about five days of immobilisation
- Dermabrasion: smoothing raised scars
- Z-plasty and W-plasty: scar procedures that release tightness and improve appearance
- Reconstructive surgery for burns to the face, ears, breasts, hands and limbs
Recovery
Healing time depends on the burn and the type of surgery, and is discussed for each patient.
What recovery looks like
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
After a skin graft, the area is kept still for about five days so the graft takes. Once healed, pressure garments are often worn for many months, with silicone and massage, to keep scars flat and soft. Physiotherapy and splints help stop scars tightening across joints. Children may need further operations as they grow.
Risks
General guidance, awaiting review by the clinic.
Infection, a graft that does not fully take, scars that thicken or tighten again, and changes in skin colour. Burns often need more than one operation.

Questions about burns surgery
Can old burn scars that limit movement be treated?
Yes. Contracture release, often with a skin graft or Z-plasty, can restore movement years after a burn.
Will I need to wear pressure garments?
Often, yes, for many months after healing. They help keep scars flat and soft.
Will my child need more operations?
Often. Scars do not grow with the child, so further releases may be needed over the years.
